The work of Caspar David Friedrich, probably the most famous painter of romatic landscapes, is full of profound symbolism and worked out to the last detail. Friedrich, who first saw the light of day on September 5th, 1774 in Greifswald studied for four years at the Academy in Copenhagen until 1798, then moved to Dresden where he lived until his dying day on May 7th, 1840.
In 1835 he suffered a stroke which effectively put an end to his painting. The artist found inspiration for his paintings during his trips to the island of Rügen, to the Riesengebirge, the Harz mountains and Bohemia. He was deeply impressed and fascinated by the atmosphere of these landscapes. Their form and colour were, for Friedrich, the embodiment of a spiritual presence in nature. The people in his paintings often appear as lonely figures engrossed in their study of nature. They often have their backs turned towards the onlooker, as Friedrich wanted to show the insignificance of man in relation to God’s creation.
