In 1894 Weisgerber begins his apprenticeship as a painter and decorator in Frankfurt. That very same year he changes to the Arts and Crafts School in Munich. After that, from 1897 till 1901 he studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, first with Gabriel Hackl and later Franz von Stuck being his mentors. From 1897 onwards Weisgerber works for the magazin “Jugend“ (German for Youth). In 1898 he meets other great artists of the period during his art classes, such as Hans Purrmann, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Willi Geiger und Gino Finetti. The Association “Sturmfackel“ (German for Storm Torch) is founded in the same year. Members of the club are Alfred Kubin, Rudolf Levy and Alfred Lörcher. Painting studies from their club sessions depicting nature scenes are shown in Albert Weisgerbers first exhibition at the “Münchner Secession“. In 1903 he spends a lot of time in St. Ingbert, where his famous “Beergarden Pictures“ are produced, which clearly show his studies of French Impressionism. Between 1905 and 1907 Albert Weisgerber travels to Paris several times for the “Jugend“ magazine, where he makes the acquaintance of Henri Matisse. His painting style is starting to show more and more influences of Cézanne, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and El Greco. Together with the choice of lighter colours in his pictures comes the tendency for areas of unbroken colours and more decorative details. Besides vaudeville and café pictures he is now mainly focussing on portraits. Due to the City Gallery Frankfurt and the “Pinakothek“ Munich buying and exhibiting some of his pictures in 1906, he starts gaining international recognition.

In 1909 Albert Weisgerber travels to Florence where his first “Sebastian“ pictures develop. Under the influence of the Italian primitive painters he dares an artistic new beginning. The same year, at the X. Art Exhibition in Munich he receives the Gold Medal. In 1911 the first big exhibiton of his work takes place in Munich and Dresden and he paints the famous picture of the “Münchner Hofgarten“ (popular renaissance garden in Munich, built under Maximilian I. 1613 – 1617). By now his creativity is driven by religious themes. In 1912 Weisgerber exhibits paintings at Paul Cassirer's in Berlin, in the Art House in Zurich and at the Special Exhibition in Cologne. In 1913 he is one of the founding members of the “Neue Münchner Secession“, which Alexej von Jawlensky, Paul Klee und Alexander Kanoldt also join. In 1914, just before being summoned Weisgerber lives to see the first exhibition at the “Neue Münchner Secession“. One year later he falls as a soldier in WW I.
