The heart
The heart, the central organ of the body and essential for human life, is at the same time the central symbol of love, soul and kindness.It is to be found in countless expressions: psychic emotions “thrill our hearts”, unrequited love “breaks” them, we give our heart to the ones we love, and a good
person has “his heart in the right place”. In the most diverse cultures the heart is until today considered as the seat of emotions, above all of love, and of the conscience, as opposed to the reason that is located in the head. In many religions as well the heart is a central symbol of the love and kindness of God, as for example in the adoration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in which it symbolises the generous love of Christ. Until today few things move us as deeply as the sight of a heart, this symbol of love, kindness and warmth in our cold rational world.
The form of the heart is to be encountered in our daily life in the most various forms, created by mankind or nature: the leaves of the trees in the shape of a heart, cacti in heart shape, bound wreaths of flowers, hearts engraved in tree trunks, pierced by arrows, with the initials of the lovers as sign of their eternal affection, as decoration on festive tables, as sign of affection and interest in letters, in wrought-iron gates, on garden gates, as jewellery, hearts made of gingerbread on popular feasts, pastry in the shape of a heart, shells and flowers arranged in the form of a heart. The ancient symbol of human life and love is omnipresent in our daily life and moves us as ever. A simple symbol has conquered the world and touched our hearts.
