Mediterranean Impressions
K arl Walter von Lom, born in 1939 in Hannover, Germany, seeked a new challenge after his architectural studies at Aachen and his work as a city planner. In 1976 he started painting as an autodidact. Very soon his paintings had a great success and were shown in various exhibits at galleries and public institutions at home and abroad. A highlight of his artistic career was the award of “Australia’s Top Selling Poster Artist” in 1996. Different journeys took him to Europe, mainly Southern Europe, North Africa and Egypt, South America, the USA, Australia and Mexico. On his travels he did not make photos but drawings.
Ethnology, especially the North American Indians, is another field of interest of Karl Walter von Lom. The representation of “fictitious realities” in his paintings is the scenery for the dreams of the beholder. In his “Mediterranean Impressions” he draws a dream picture of Greece, full of transparency and poetry, serene and carefree scenes: radiant whitehouses with turquoise doors and windows set against the background of the blue sea, churches with their domes, under the glowing sun, graceful cats, light-flooded arcades, charm of the South, symphony in white and blue. In their intensity and clearness the colours are simultaneously landscape, atmosphere, mood and light.
