Series of pictures: Small world
As long as humans have existed, growing up children have learned about the life that lies ahead of them in a playful manner, step by step, something new every day. And almost as long the doll as a toy representing us humans has existed and been used when bringing up children. The first variations might have been quite simple, made from wood, leaves, grass or straw, later followed by slightly advanced versions using fur, leather or fabrics to create a human-like image. But only over the last few generations have European dollmakers mastered the art of creating more sophisticated models out of paper-like and porcellain materials, which are nowadays being replaced by various plastics and synthetics. The many different styles, as for example stick and glove puppets, marionettes or normal full-sized dolls allow the persons who play with them to express themselves in various manners. The dolls and puppets also mirror the craftsmenship and the spirit of the time they were made in. Around the turn of the 20. century skillfully decorated dolls in bourgois children's rooms reached a new peak. They were being lovingly presented in little “real life scenes“, such as in a shop, a haidresser's salon or in a fancy kitchen including stylish cooking utilities and other little accessories. These miniature worlds tell us a lot about the culture and the social rank of the owner.
