Vincent van Gogh
There ist scarcely another name besides the name Vincent van Gogh that stands for artistic genius and personal tragedy alike. With his expressive works of art the eminent Dutchman had a decisive and lasting influence on modern art and paved its way into the 20th Century. Yet he was not granted the privilege to experience the appreciation of his art during his lifetime. It was only long after his death in 1890 that the genius of this eminent artist was recognised. Van Gogh succeeded in letting art and live flow into one another in a unique and unprecedented symbiosis. For him, art meant to pint live. Accordingly, he applied the basis elements of art – colour, line and composition – with a liveliness that went far beyond its mere function as artistic style elements. Clour as source of life, line as movement factor and the composition as a symbol for his view of the world in which live is taking place.
His most famous works van Gogh painted during his stay in the Provence during the last years of his live. In Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise, he created the unbelievable number of 463 pictures in just three years wich in itself is a clear sign for the isolated and ecstatic emotional state Vincent van Gogh was in during the last phase of his life. At this point of time he had already given up hopes and expectations ofr his earthly existence, yet projected these into his works of art – convinced of the imagination to live only in a transition status as a middleman for the reincarnation of true art and to work. Driven by this conviction the explosion-like unfolding of colours in Arles was followed by almost ecxtatic expressiveness in Saint-Rémy and Auverssur-
Oise.
This postcard book shows 30 selected masterpieces that were created during Vincent van Goghs last years. It bears impressive witness to this inspired and tragic phase in the life of this unforgotten artist.
