Time for reflection
All too rarely do we find the time to escape for a while from the frantic pace of our daily routine. In fact we only manage to do so once a year, in Advent. Nature is not the only one to take a rest at this time of year
The smell of freshly baked mince pies and Christmas trees floats from every home, while decorated, brightly lit windows shine forth through the darkness of night. Moreover, in some front gardens the glow of fairy lights on the trees heralds the arrival of the Christmas season.
Carols are sung and stories told in front rooms all over the world. And we finally make the time to write to all our friends and send them our very best wishes for the future.
Apart from letters, Christmas cards are probably our favourite type of message. Coming with an infinite choice of themes and colours, they reflect more than just the good wishes we write. For over a hundred years Christmas cards have also provided an artistic mirror of their respective era and have much to tell us about the hopes and yearnings of days gone by.
