Winter
Much is different in the season of cold days and long nights. The trees have long since shed their last leaves and many of our feathered friends have departed for southern climes. Nature retires and gathers new strength tucked up snugly beneath a warm blanket of snow. The winter sun hangs low in the sky even at noon, transformingfamiliar landscapes into a dreamy blend of sugar, powder and cotton wool.
Winter has many countenances. The snow quietly crunches beneath our boots. Long, glistening icicles hang from gutters, eaves and overhead cables. The air is as clear as rock crystal, and trees, buildings and fences are all capped with snow. All around are frozen ponds and lakes, snow-covered footpaths and mountain pastures, white hillsides and valleys, snowmen and small igloos in front gardens, as well as birdhouses on walls and trees.
Moreover, the atmosphere of winter touches us to the very core, conjuring up feelings of calm, reflection and hopeful anticipation for the coming season.
