Fences and Walls
Though the significance that the wall had a long time ago in the context of castles and fortresses has slightly changed, its purpose may be derived even today from history. It is true that it no longer serves primarily - such as the city walls considered a privilege in the Middle Ages - as a defence against enemies and potential intruders, yet more of its original significance has been preserved than one would assume at first sight. Thus the classical wall still serves as border and separation between two areas, its impenetrability conveying not only protection but also private sphere and the feeling of “being at home”. The fence represents a less determined variety of separation, today more than ever. Whether metal, paling, garden or palisade fence, to name only a few appearances of the fence, it can be displaced and moreover offers the outside observer a restricted view of the interior of the limited estate which enlarges the psychology of its application. Whether impenetrable wall or a fence leading to insight, both are up to the present day an expression of attitude of life and power, illustrated by the ambiguity of shutting the stranger and “anything not desired” in or out. According to their application these seemingly ordinary objects may in the end become the cause of many different personal sensations.
