Especially in recent times nature hasn't been a strong focus point in our architecture and planning, so the avenues appear to be an attempt to reach out to long gone days. As far back as in the Napoleonic times the big boulevards built for military purposes were lined by trees. But often these avenues also served as the link between cities and residence parks, pilgrimage churches or other sanctuaries. And although they also served as a visual enrichment, their main purpose in these days was for the dense treetops to give shelter from rain, wind and sunshine. Still today limetrees, poplars, maples, chestnut trees and oaks alike border our boulevards, with the difference being, that today the walk through those avenues has become the actual intent rather than just being part of the journey. The blaze of colours in autumn as well as the snowcovered branches in winter are a sight that doesn't meet the city dweller's eye very frequently. The tree, which is exposed to the repeating rhythms of nature, braves the elements with its strong roots and is thus since time immemorial seen as one of the most expressive symbols for life. An impression of a man-made order disguised in the dress of mother nature is exactly what photographer Josef Bieker has managed to capture in his impressive images.
