DEFA feature films from Babelsberg
The film studios in Babelsberg are world-renowned. From 1912 they were run by a film company called 'Deutsche Bioscop' which was merged with the Universum Film AG (UFA) in 1921. The UFA continued to run the studios till after WW II. The DEFA, which had been founded in 1946 owned the Babelsberg studios, which are situated near Berlin, from 1948 onwards. Almost all out of the over 1200 films produced for TV and cinema by the DEFA between 1947 and 1993 were filmed at the Babelsberg studios. After the GDR had been formed in 1949 the DEFA became state-owned, had exclusive filming and producing rights across the country and was controlled by the government. The company produced feature and animation films as well as documentaries and until 1993 Babelsberg remained the heart of East-German film industry. On an area of 450 000 m² a proper 'film town' had developed over the course of the decades. The DEFA-productions covered a wide spectrum of film genres from historical and musical films to children's movies. Already the DEFA's first film, 'Die Mörder sind unter uns', ('The murderers are among us') directed by Wolfgang Staudte and starring Hildegard Knef critically dealt with fascism and earned the DEFA international recognition. The most famous DEFA film 'Paul und Paula' made the actress Angelica Domröse a film star of her time.
