Impressionists
Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne – these are the very famous names which even most people who would not describe themselves as art connoisseurs relate to Impressionism. Today their paintings belong to the repertoir of classis modern art along with works from Lovis Corinth, Camille Corot, Paus Signac, Berthe Morisot or Max Liebermann. Many of them have often been reproduced on postcards, posters or prints, they hang in many living-rooms, schools or doctors’ sugeries, which makes it difficult to believe that they were regarded as scandalous at the time of their creation.
Impressionism – the name comes from Monet’s painting “Impression, soleil levant“ – developed in the middle of the 19th century as a counterpart to so-called salon art. The latter oriented itself to society and fashion, using conventional media and motifs. Many excellently painted pictures were created, however, they showed absolutely no artistic development. The avantgarde painters counteracted by using other themes, motifs, details and new forms of artistic design. They concerned themselves with exhibiting and selling their works since their paintings, which were regarded as shocking, were not allowed to be displayed in the large exhibition rooms. Only a few were able to live from the sale of their work. Nowaday each individual painting is worth millions.
