August Macke
“Art should be a well composed choice, a mirror of feelings” – this is, what August Macke himself demanded from his works. The main topic of this young painter at the beginning of the 20th century was above all the feeling for nature near and around us in all its facets and people in their natural surrounding. His main means of design was the brightness of thecolours, and with his preference to light, clear tones AugustMacke nowadays is considered to be the most talented German painter of his generation.
Born in 1887 in Meschede, painting and designing soon became the determining elements in his life, and despite of his youth AugustMacke soon developed to one of the most important representatives for expressionism. In a nearly unique way he managed to create a new, individual style by combining different determining elements – for example from orphism, cubism and futurism – that should be his special trademark for the rest of his life.
Mackes inspirations always came from the people in his immediate surrounding, he impressively portrays situations of daily life in clear and virgin colours. But he also allowed influence of the expreriences made in meeting other painters in his works. This can be seen in the colourful pintings from his travel to Tunis, together with Paul Klee and LouisMoilliet, paintings which count amongst the heyday of the complete works of Macke.
The 30 selected motifs of this postcard book are a cross-section through Mackes world of bright colours, paintings from his earliest days can be found  as well as those of his summit in popular creative power, which was suddenly interrupted by World War I.
August Macke died on 26th september 1914 on the battlefields in France, in the Champagne, being only 27 years old.
