It is hard to imagine kitchens and gardens without herbs. Their significance is really immeasurable. After all, they are a treat for our senses. Their wonderful aromas enrich every meal and turn the simplest dishes into a delicacy. Lavender, cilantro, dill, hollyhock, cardamom, mint, hyssop, pepper, paprika, sage, tarragon, cress, onion, fennel, celery, basil: The spectrum extends from cool and refreshing through to exotic and sweet. They have been indispensable for thousands of years not only because of their fragrance and taste but also because of their manifold healing properties. There is hardly a type of plant that is as unassuming. And many people do not even realise that herbs can lend great beauty to a flower garden.
In this respect, herbs can easily compete with ornamental plants. And as carefully arranged herbal decorations, they radiate natural beauty and gentle cheerfulness. With an almost indescribable effect, they become a genuine attention getter, as can easily be seen in the photographs taken by Rita Bellman.
