Franz Marc
“The worthiest deed is painting simplest element of nature incorporating all beliefs and yearnings.” This is how Franz Marc himself characterized the philosophy of art and thus confirms how deeply the great names such as Cézanne, Gauguin and especially Vincent van Gogh impressed him. Not only the inner affinity with van Gogh, the fervent assimilation of varying effects and the rapid expression of his own style, made Marc one of the greatest pioneers of abstract art at the beginning of the 20th century.
Born in 1880 in Munich, Franz Marc was deeply interested in theology before devoting himself fully to art at the Munich Academy. He soon developed a preference for nature, the relationship between the animal and human world being a focal point. The unusual use of colors also played a vital role in his artistic development which motivated him in creating the group around the “Blue Rider” together with his friend Wassily Kandinsky. The continuous exchange with Kandinsky also led to the full development of Franz Marc’s artistic ability.
Conscious of this exceptional ability, Marc became one of the major German expressionists of his time – a development which was stopped abruptly by World War One, as in the same way in the case of his friend August Macke. Franz Marc was killed at the age of 36, whilst in action in Verdun in March 1916.
