Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Born in 1864 asdescendant of the old French aristocracy, 14 year old Henri had to get used to the certainty to live as a cripped "dwarf", caused by the fracture of both upper thigh bones during his childhood. In concsciousness of his "being different" - handicapped by the corporal damages and often teased or derided by his contemoraries - Toulouse-Lautrec developed features which were extremely important for his kind of paint: the capability of a "photographica" observation as well as putting himself into the psyone of other people. These features enabled him to give this incomparable touch of reality characterising his pictures. Special inspiration to him was the Montmatre in Paris by night. Toulouse-Lautrec used with passion the colourful range of the different topics and characters of the night clubs, cafés, cabarets and brothels. but he always painted and drew faithful out of the perspective of the objective onlooker, without the raised moralistic forefinger of the social seniou, a position which he could have taken due to his noble birth. He neither critisized, nor added or deleted something - and exactly this determins the quality of his works. They show real life, such as he saw it, they show real moods and character studies, a mixture of implicity and ordinarity, of bourgeoisie and vice. The lifework of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec can be seen in the capture of the Belle Epoque of Paris, in its complete spectrum without any make-up. He died in 1901, just 36 years old.
