Pigs
Since the beginning of time pigs have played a part in human life. In Spain, a prehistoric cave painting of a pig has been discovered and as early as the 7th century B.C. man began taming wild boars, the ancestors of today‘s domestic pig.
Ham, sausage and lard from pork were popular among the Greeks and Romans, the Celts honoured a wild boar god and historical writtings speak of the boar helmets which the old Teotons wore. In the last decades, however, we have not treated the pig, the main source of meat for our kitchens, especially well. A life in a battery farm is the fate of most swine, who have attracted public attention because of poor conditions and hormone scandals. Nonetheless, the pig is still seen today as a lucky charm. Especially at the turn of the year or in sayings like „happy as a pig in clover“, this animal symbol comes into its own.
The 30 pictures in this postcard book show free-range „happy“ pigs, who have unfortunately become of relic of former times.
