When the summer sun is at its highest is when we find them – sunflowers. Growing to a lordly height of sometimes three metres on large fields or in forgotten spots amidst the urban surroundings, in rural front gardens, and on natural pastures and fields, they spend the day stretching their yellow heads towards the sun’s warming rays.
With its daily movement following the sun, the sunflowers vividly demonstrates the interaction between light, heat and all living things on earth. Their heads rich in sunflower seeds with their yellow petals are reminiscent of a crowd of small earthly sun children.
Yet the sunflowers is equally important to us as a natural crop. From its seeds we obtain a bright yellow natural oil, which is processed to from a
high-quality vegetable oil.
In late summer the sunflower fields are full of different birds, who also appreciate this natural source of nutrition.
And in winter, when conditions make it more difficult for our feathered friends to find nourishment under the thick blanket of snow, we lay out sunflower seeds for them – and gaze through the window in delight at the revelry on the bird table.
