Lake Constance
Lake Constance, with an area of 538 square kilometres (208 square miles), is Germany`s largest inland water. Lying on the Southers border with Switzerland, it is the popular goal of last-minute holidaymakers - those seeking rest and relaxation and those eager to explore the region`s rich cultural landscape. The earliest traces of human settlement in the area date back to Neolithic times. Reconstructed pile dwellings and original archaeological find illuminate the prehistoric lifestyles of the hunters and fishers who once inhabited these shores.
The island of Mainau, just north of Constance, is world famous for its flowers. The dahlias and tulips which bloom in its gardens conceal a darker history, however: the island served the Romans as a stronghold, and later, during the Thirty Years' War, numerous peel towers were erected here. Mainau`s present owner, Count Lennart Bernadotte von Wisborg, a member of the Swedish royal family, transformed it into what it is today; a peaceful island of flowers.
Visitors are equally captivated by Constance itself, where colourful, crooked houses crowd around the many churches in the city`s historical centre. As Werner Bergengruen wrote in the thirties: “Constance both unites an preserves every facet of the Lake Constance landscape. Except for Lindau, Lake Constance`s other towns lie on the open shore, whereas Constance nestles within an intimate embrace of water. Two arms of the lake and the Rhine converge upon the town... A fresh odour of age and water rises from the river and the lake.”
For water-lovers, there is swimming and surfing, or a sail around the lake with the “White Fleet”. Riding, walking, skiing, hang-gliding and gliding are all available.
