The Expressionists
The revolutionised art trend of Expressionism originated from the artists’ society “The Bridge”, founded in 1905 in Dresden, and in 1911 it got a further centre with the “Blue Rider” artists’ group from Munich. The desire of this young generation of artists, in sharp contrasts to Impressionism, was to give expression to a spiritual concept and emotional experience. The work of art was not supposed to serve the aesthetic pleasure but instead was to reflect elementary experiences in a completely new way. Above all the expressionists lokked on the works of van Gogh, Cézanne, Gauguin, Munch and Ensor as model examples. Besides this the art of the Middle Ages, folk art, as well as the paintings of peoples living in their natural states had a stimulative effect. In order to present their own socially and religiously influenced experiences of reality as powerfully as possible, the expressionists often used gaudy colours as well as colour contrasts and portrayed natural forms in distorted proportions.
This book of postcards offers a selection of 30 impressive works which let us step into the fascinating world of forms and colours, the world of Expressionism.
