Bicycles
“As long as people can move their arms and legs, they will keep bicycling“. Thus expressed James Starley the enthusiasm for bicycles in 1881. When bicycles were not mass produced, but individual ’characters’ borne on the prestige and the company ethos of their producers, bicycles were a sight to behold. Today more than 70 million bicycles are produced per year world-wide. The largest bicycle producer is Taiwan, followed by the USA, Japan and Germany. These days, the individual touch is a result of theit owners’ devotion, who – with a touch of paint or striking decoration – turn their bicycles into real characters. The myriad of possibilities have been captured on camera by the photographers Susanne Bartsch-Nagi and Udo Haafke. Creativity and a love of detail characterize the 30 snapshots in this postcard book. Whether it’s a picturesque ’still-life with bicycle’ or a back wheel covered with mussels, a red painted bell on a handlebar or a blowup of a bicycle seat – all these photos show that bicycle riding is not only practical and environmentally sound, it is at the same time a philosophy.
