Lighthouses
For thousands of years humans have sought far-off shores looking for other people and new worlds. Initially they set out on foot going through forests to find the next settlement, then horsemounted over mountains, rivers and valleys to distant countries and then even with the wind at their back on open seas to discover new shores. And yet there was always this foreboding feeling that they might not find their way back home. On high seas mariners had to rely on the stars for navigation. At important points on isolated or treacherous coasts they erected high towers with an eternally burning fire so that they were visible over great distances and could penetrate fog and night to mark coastlines and harbors. Today it is still possible to find such lighthouses, standing guard - solitary and proud - at these inhospitable or uninhabited locations. As majestic monuments they tower over their surroundings and bear witness to the expertise of their builders as well as to the courage of the men who dared to challenge the forces of nature on the seven seas.
