Fragrant dreams
Very few plants fascinate us as much as orchids do as a result of the almost unlimited number of unique shapes and splendid colours. Their bizarre, fragrant and long-lasting blossoms make them one of the sought-after ornamental plants of all.
Orchids, with approximately 600 general and almost 20,000 different species, represent the largest family of flowering plants on earth. In our moderate climatic zones we even find them as terrestrial perennials. Especially native species like lady’s slipper, wild orchid, moccasin flower, mountain maid, ruby slippers, hochgern and perseus grow on untouched mountainous glades. In subtropical and tropical regions orchids attain the greatest variety of shapes and splendid colours as an epiphytic plant.
From ancient times to early Middle Ages orchids have been cherished as an aphrodisiac due to the distinct testicle-like shape of the root tubers (Latin: orchis – ”testicle“).
And it ist still true today that a single orchid blossom expresses far more that an entire bouquet of flowers.
