Renate Otto: Angels – Your Heavenly Companions
The word “angel“, according to the dictionary derives from the Greek “angelos“, which means messenger and in many religions angels are seen as mediators between gods and humans.
An extensive angelology exists in late Judaism, Islam and especially in Christianity. Originally angels were imagined as supernatural and sexless beings but the image of the bodyless holy spirit has evolved over time. In the New Testament angels are especially depicted as God's messengers, but on some occasions as evil demons. Already in the Old Church the reverence of angels was very common.
Nowadays, according to various studies about half of all Europeans and even more Americans are convinced they have a personal Guardian Angel. How do they know that? They have either “felt“ them, spoken to them in their dreams or simply sense their overwhelming presence with certainty. The mediators between God and humans are present wherever 2000 years of occidental history have worked their magic. No church is without angels and in the Holy Bible there are over 300 sections mentioning the “messengers of God“. Even now in our modern world angels are omnipresent, on books, postcards, t-shirts, bags, posters, cosmetic products and packaging.
The artist Renate Otto, born in 1947 in Lüdenscheid, Germany has her very own interpretation of angels, as is shown in this postcard booklet. Her water colours are an aesthetic experience and the perfection with which she masters her pictures is a delight for the beholder's senses. The wet-on-wet method that Otto applies, sometimes combined with the use of Indian ink gives a certain softness and kindness to the foreground. This enhances the strong presence of the angels in the background. The mood of the pictures gives a feeling of strength and rest at the same time. Many of the artist's pictures, who has been freelancing since 1980, are published in international editorials as book illustrations, art prints, calendars or art compilations.Today Renate Otto has studios in Friesenheim and on the German island of Sylt.
