Roses
The Greek poet Sappho was the first to call the rose the “Queen of the Flowers” due to its beauty. Since ancient times the red rose is the Symbol of love, joy and youth and is praised in many cultures as well as countless legends, fairy tales, poems and songs as symol of proud beauty. Ancient legends tell us how the rose rose from the foam of the sea together with Venus or was created out of the blood of Adonis. Because of its spines the rose also was the symbol of pangs of love and the untouchable beauty of a noble woman.
In many religions the rose is a saint symbol and the unction with rose oil a sacred act. In Persia, the country of origin of rose oil production, rose gardens have existed for millennums. In the Roman Empire roses were imported from Egypt and cultivated in glasshouses. Wherever you find them – on meadows and fields, in gardens or in the parks of palaces – the “Queen of the Flowers” has lost nothing of its appeal until today, and the exquisite beauty of the colours and forms of this noble flower fascinates us now as before.
