Nature trails
According to ancient Greek wisdom, „The path is the goal“. This paradoxical aphorism still carries a message for modern ears. For indeed, we do not always follow a path in order to get somewhere. Not all roads lead straight to Rome: some may be side roads or back roads, slip roads or even deadend roads.
We may find ourselves strolling along a wide path with a clear view of the horizon, or fighting our way through an overgrown jungle path with a machete. We may follow an inviting path through forests of pine and meadows of wild flowers, or struggle up a strenuous mountain path, wind our way precariously through a dangerous swamp, or trudge along a seemingly endless coastal path beside the waters' edge. There is a different path, too, for every season: through blossoming fields in springtime, through heat-drenched parks in summer, through golden forests in autumn and through ice and snow in winter.
There are paths which we are glad to take again and again, either through habit or because we once walked them with someone we loved. There are paths which we avoid, because they hold unhappy memories. Along the path itself, we may walk, run or slink, march or plotter, step out briskly or pause at regular intervals.
The most popular metaphors for for human existence remain the path, the road and the way. These can be rocky, thorny and slippery and can lead us astray, downhill, to madness and even to Hell. It seems the negative images outweigh the positive. Non of us, however, may simply stand still; all of us must make our own way. What matters, then, are the signposts that we can follow, the guides whom we can trust and the travelling companions with whom we can share the journey.
