Sylt
Germany's northernmost island has lost none of its original charms. Sylt's sandy beaches and sunny skies ensure that it remains a popular escape even outside the main summer season. Its North Sea climate, sea air and varied scenery provide refreshment for both body and soul. Long walks along the beautiful beaches above List and south of Rantum are equally atmospheric in stormy weather, too. Nor do the island's attractions lie solely in its beaches and coastline; Sylt's townscapes and architecture are also well worth a visit. For those approaching by car across the Hindenburg dyke, the Kampen lighthouse can be seen from afar. Thatched Frisian cottages with typical Sylt doors characterize the small towns of Hörnum, Rantum, Keitum and Kampen. Westerland, the best-known town on Sylt, first became a seaside resort in 1855. Its long promenade lies directly on the sea. The loveliest faces of this delightful island have been captured in the present book of postcards by artist Renate Otto.
