Alleys
As nature has recently often been neglected by man and not integrated in plannings, avenues in these days seem like an attempt at remembering the days gone by. Although the lines of trees were set up at the side of the military roads by Napoleon, the avenues were at the same time frequently a connecting link as well between cities and residence gardens, pilgrimage churches or other places of recreation. They were not only an optical
enrichment but its dense treetops also offered protection against sun, wind and rain. Whether limes, poplars, maples, horse chestnuts or oaks, they still accompany us on our ways, the walk through the avenues having turned into the real destination. The rich colouring of the leaves in autumn and the snow covered branches in winter are impressions that manifest themselves only seldom elsewhere to the townsman. The tree – taking up the challenges of the ever returning rhythms of nature and standing firmly rooted up to them – is still considered as one of the most expressive symbols of life.
