The Colours of Light
The connection between light and colour pervades the entire history of mankind. Already in antiquity Aristotle classified the colours as depending on light, as among other reasons they only became visible at sunrise and disappeared again at dusk. Before Newton finally found out by means of the refraction of light that it contains many different colours in the form of rays it was assumed in the Middle Ages that the colour is an integral part of the
observed objects.
Today one knows about the significance of the wavelength for the appearance of the different colours and roughly subdivided the shades of colour created by the refraction of light and merging into one another from red to violet into 6 spectral colours. Their entire chromatic spectrum reveals itself to us for example at the sight of a rainbow when the water of the raindrops refracts the light.
Especially the individual emotions caused by the perception of shades of colours turn them into a very personal treasury that is filled with impressions, memories and emotions in the course of a life. Often derived from old myths connections of the colours with sounds, symbols and numbers up to precious stones, signs of the zodiac and planets have developed up to present days. Goethe even tried to refute Newton’s purely scientific theory with his “theory of colours” also based on experience. Regardless of the individual opinion it is a fact that light is vital. The infinite variety of colours of a natural phenomenon appeals to our senses and helps us to gain new power.
